Last night was plyometrics – Day 2 in my P90x program. Plyometrics exercises use explosive movements to develop power in your muscles to increase an athletes’ output. Plyometric training involves movements where you load your muscle and then contract it in a rapid sequence. This type of training is designed to condition your muscles so you can jump higher, run faster, throw faster, or whatever training you require to build endurance, speed and strength. Let me tell you -this type of exercise is not for the faint of heart!
I am in no way an athlete on any level but I have danced ballet, Jazz and Modern dance my entire life, and I had a tough time with these exercises. The movements were awkward and it didn’t help that I was trying to jump and land on the plush carpet in my living room! But, my observation is this, it is all about changing up your routine and causing what P90x trainer, Tony Horton says “Muscle Confusion” and what better way to achieve that than to do exercises that you normally would not do.
In the P90x program, we are given the option to continue with Plyometrics or move to the lower cardio program of Cardio X and I am torn between the decision of which on to chose, but I am leaning towards continuing with Plyometrics because it is so challenging and different. As my good friend Steve says,” do work it real hard and do what you can until you can’t do anymore and strive to beat it the next time”.
So there you go… Plyometrics are in!
